Anise Scented Goldenrod is a native perennial wildflower in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is found throughout Alabama. Anise Scented Goldenrod grows in pine woodlands, prairies, old fields, rocky woods, and open hardwood stands. It is one of the easiest Goldenrods to identify because of the anise scent found in its leaves. Anise Scented Goldenrod grows from one to four feet in height. It has narrow, alternate, lance-shaped leaves that have an entire margin. The leaves have translucent dots on them (best observed by holding a leaf up towards a light source). The upper leaves often have small fascicles of leaves in their axils. The flowers are produced in heads. Both the ray and disc flowers are yellow. The heads are arranged in open panicles. Anise Scented Goldenrod is often available from wildflower nurseries. It is one of the best Goldenrods for the home landscape because it doesn’t tend to become weedy and spread throughout the garden. Anise Scented Goldenrod grows on a variety of well drained soils in full sun. An herbal tea has been made from the dried leaves and dried open flowers.--A. Diamond
