Wreath Goldenrod is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Wreath Goldenrod usually occurs on slopes in mesic hardwood forests or on the steep banks of streams. It is a perennial with a short rhizome. Stems are arching, usually unbranched, green to purple in color, glaucous, and glabrous. The stems are from 1-3 feet in length. The leaves are alternate, sessile, lanceolate in outline, with toothed margins. The leaves are sparsely pubescent. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are in short axillary secund racemes in the axils of the mid and upper leaves. Each head has 1-6 yellow ray flowers and 3-9 yellow disc flowers. The fruit is a pubescent achene with a tuft of pappus at its apex. Wreath Goldenrod is often available from wildflower nurseries. It prefers a well-draining soil in full sun to part shade.—A. Diamond
