Cutleaf Coneflower is a native perennial in the Sunflower family (asteraceae). It occurs throughout Alabama. Cutleaf Coneflower grows in low woods, along streams and rivers, in wet roadside ditches, and around ponds and lakes. It is a perennial from an elongated rhizome. Stems are green in color and often glaucous. Plants are from 3-8 feet in height. Leaves are basal and cauline, petiolate, pinnatifid to pinnately compound, glabrous or pubescent, with entire or toothed margins. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in corymbs. Each head has 8-12 yellow ray flowers and 150-300 greenish-yellow disc flowers. The fruit is an achene. Two varieties occur in Alabama: Cutleaf Coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata Linnaeus var. laciniata), and Coastal Plain Cutleaf Coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata Linnaeus var. digitata (P. Miller) Fiori). Coastal Plain Cutleaf Coneflower differs from the typical variety by having basal and lower stem leaves with 0-5 lobes as opposed to basal and lower stem leaves 1–2-pinnatifid or with 5–11 lobes. Cutleaf Coneflower is a popular ornamental and is often available from nurseries. It is also easily grown from seed, and large closed can be separated in the autumn. It prefers a moist, organic rich soil in full or partial sun.--A. Diamond
