Eastern Rabbit Tobacco is a native herbaceous annual in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Eastern Rabbit Tobacco occurs in dry woods, on roadsides, around the edges of fields, in pastures, and in other disturbed sites. It is an fragrant annual with a tap root. Stems are 1 to 3 feet in height, white tomentose, and branched from the middle upwards. Leaves are alternate, sessile, linear to oblanceolate in outline, green and glabrous above, white tomentose below. The leaves and lower portion of the stem may be slightly glandular. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in corymbs. Heads consists of yellow disc flowers. The heads contain 38-96 pistillate florets and 4-11 bisexual florets. The fruit is an achene. Eastern Rabbit Tobacco has many traditional medicinal uses. It has also been utilized as a tobacco substitute for smoking or chewing. Eastern Rabbit Tobacco can also be dried and used in flower arrangements. Its resinous odor is reflected in its other common names-- White Balsam or Sweet Everlasting.--A. Diamond
