Hollow Stem Joe Pye Weed is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Hollow Stem Joe Pye Weed occurs along streams and rivers, around ponds and lakes, in alluvial forests, and in wet roadside ditches. It is a clump forming perennial with fibrous roots. The stems are 6-12 feet in height, hollow, glabrous, glaucous, and purplish in color. The leaves are in whorls of 4-6 along the stem. The leaves are petiolate, lanceolate in outline, serrate with rounded teeth, and glabrous or sparsely pubescent. The veins are impressed on the upper surface of the leaf and raised on the lower surface. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in dome-shaped corymbs. Each head has pale purplish phyllaries and 4-22 whitish to purplish disc flowers. The fruit is an achene. Hollow Stem Joe Pye Weed is sometimes available from nurseries. It prefers a moist, fertile soil in full sun. The common name “Joe Pye Weed” is a corruption of the name of a Native American healer in New England (Jopi) who used members of this genus to treat a number of ailments. When in flower, Hollow Stem Joe Pye Weed attracts many insects, including numerous butterflies. --A. Diamond
