Slender Goldentop is a native perennial in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It occurs in the southern half of Alabama. Slender Goldentop occurs in mesic, sandy pine forests, in moist to wet roadside ditches, along streams, around ponds and lakes, and between dunes. It is a perennial with creeping rhizomes. Stems are 1-3 feet tall, branched above the middle, angled, and glabrous or pubescent. Leaves are alternate, linear in outline, with one vein. There are often axillary fascicles in at least the mid and lower stem leaves. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in flat topped arrays. Each head has 7-25 yellow ray flowers and 3-22 yellow disc flowers. The fruit is an achene. Slender Goldentop is occasionally available from native plant nurseries. It prefers an acidic, sandy soil in full sun. When in flower Slender Goldentop attracts large numbers of butterflies, moths, bees, and wasps. In Florida it is considered a pest in pastures.--A.
