Late Flowering Thoroughwort is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is found throughout Alabama. Late Flowering Thoroughwort occurs on river banks, in prairies and old fields, in forest clearings, and in other disturbed sites. It is a perennial from a hardened base or short rhizome. Stems are erect, 3-6 feet in height, branched above the middle, and pubescent. Leaves are opposite, petiolate, lanceolate in outline, with coarsely serrate or rarely entire margins. Both surfaces of the leaf are slightly pubescent and gland dotted. The upper surface of the leaf is dark green in color and the lower surface in lighter green in color. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in corymbs. Each head has 9-15 white disc flowers. It is an important late season nectar source, and the flowers attract numerous bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, moths, and beetles. The fruit is an achene. Late Flowering Thoroughwort can be used in wildflower meadows and pollinator gardens. It prefers a site with full to partial sun and moist, organic rich soils. It often looses its lower leaves during drought.—A. Diamond.
