Woolly Elephant's Foot is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is native to all of Alabama. It is a perennial with a short rhizome. Leaves form a basal rosette. The leaves are winged petiolate to sessile, obovate, spatulate or oblanceolate in outline, pubescent on both surfaces, gland dotted, with toothed margins. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in corymbs or panicles. The flowering stalk is 1-2 feet in height, pubescent, and has 1-3 small alternate sessile leaves. Each head is subtended by 2-3 rounded-triangular bracts. The heads have 4-5 purple disc flowers. Each head has 8 phyllaries that are gland dotted. The individual flowers are funnelform with 5 linear lobes. The fruit is a 10-ribbed achene.--A. Diamond
