Swamp Coreopsis is a native herbaceous short-lived perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It grows in the southern-most counties of Alabama. Swamp Coreopsis occurs along the margins of pond cypress depressions, in wet pine flatwoods, and in water-filled roadside ditches. It is a perennial from a corm. Stems are erect, glabrous, glaucous, and branched near the top. The stems are 3-4 feet in height. Leaves are cauline and basal; those on the stems are alternate. The leaves are terete, glabrous, and lack blades. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are solitary on long peduncles or in corymbiform arrays. Each head is subtended by 5–8 bractlets, and 8 phyllaries. Each head has 8 three-lobed purplish-pink ray flowers and 60-120 yellow disc flowers. The fruit is a winged achene. Swamp Coreopsis is listed as an S1 species in Alabama (5 or fewer occurrences, very few remaining individuals, or some factor of its biology making it especially vulnerable in the state), and globally as a G3 species (imperiled globally because of rarity, or very vulnerable to extinction throughout its range because of other factors). Swamp Coreopsis plants are occasionally available from nurseries that specialize in native plants. It prefers a consistently wet, peaty soil in full sun. It can also be grown from seed, but will usually not flower until the second year.—A. Diamond.
