Greater Tickseed is a native herbaceous perennial in the Aster family (Asteraceae). It occurs throughout Alabama. Greater Tickseed occurs in thin woods, in pine woodlands, in hardwood forests, in sand hills, and in prairies. It is a perennial from a long slender rhizome. Stems are erect and up to 4 feet in height. Stems may be pubescent or glabrous. Leaves are opposite, sessile or with very short petioles, and pinnately dissected into three leaflets. They have they appearance of a whorl of six leaves. The leaflets are elliptic to lanceolate in outline, with entire margins. They may be pubescent or glabrous. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in corymbs at the apex of the stems. Ray and disc flowers are yellow. The fruit is a winged achene. Greater Tickseed is often available from wildflower nurseries. It prefers full to partial sun and average soil. Greater Tickseed is drought tolerant once established. Removing old flower heads prevents self-seeding and promotes continued flowering. Greater Tickseed can be used with other summer flowering perennials, as a back border of beds, along fence rows, or naturalized in a meadow. Plants can easily be grown from seed, and old clumps can be divided in the autumn.--A. Diamond
