Eastern False Boneset is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is native to all of Alabama. Eastern False Boneset occurs in prairies, in open pine woods, in dry hardwood forests, and in cutover woodlands. Plants are perennial with a taproot and a woody base. Stems are erect, 1-3 feet in height, pubescent, green or reddish-brown in color, and branched above the middle. Leaves are opposite, short petiolate, lanceolate to oblong in outline, with slightly toothed margins. The leaves are glandular pubescent on their surfaces. Flower are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in panicles or corymbs. The peduncles of the heads are glandular pubescent. Phyllaries are in 4-6 series, green, tan or purple in color, gland dotted, with ciliate margins. Each head has 10-30 disc flowers that are yellowish or greenish in color. The fruit is a pubescent, gland dotted achene with tan, plumose pappus. Eastern False Boneset prefers full sun with a well-draining soil. It is tolerant of drought and nutrient poor soils. The larvae of the Three-lined Flower Moth (Schinia trifascia), feed on the developing seed heads.--A. Diamond
