One Flower Honeycomb Head is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It can be found in the southern third of Alabama. One Flower Honeycomb Head occurs in Pitcher Plant bogs, in wet pine savannahs, in wet roadside ditches, and on seepage slopes. It is a fibrous rooted perennial. Stems are usually solitary, erect, and unbranched or branched above the middle. The stems are green in color, pubescent, and ribbed. Leaves are basal and cauline. The basal leaves are spatulate, entire, and form a rosette. They may not be present at flowering time. Stem leaves are alternate, sessile, narrowly spatulate, entire, and pubescent. The stem leaves are often appressed or ascending. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are solitary on long peduncles. Each head has 8-22 yellow ray flowers and 50-180 yellow disc flowers. The fruit is an achene with a crown of scales. One Flower Honeycomb Head is not usually available in nurseries. It can be grown from seed. The plants prefer a moist to wet soil in full sun. One Flower Honeycomb Head can be used in a bog garden or other wet location.—A. Diamond
