Georgia Indian Plantain is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is native to the southern third of Alabama. Georgia Indian Plantain occurs in Pitcher Plant bogs, in seeps, and along small streams. It is a perennial from a hardened base. The stems are erect, unbranched, 1-3 feet in height, strongly ridged, green or streaked with purple in color, and glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Leaves are basal and cauline. The basal leaves are petiolate, ovate to elliptic in outline with the blade decurrent onto the petiole, thick and firm in texture, glabrous, with 3 main veins and entire or toothed margins. Basal leaves are often not present at flowering. The stem leaves are alternate, similar to the basal leaves but becoming sessile and reduced in size upwards. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in terminal corymbs. The heads are cylindrical with 5 pale green phyllaries having a winged midvein and hyaline margins. Each head produces 5 disc flowers. The flowers are white or greenish, sometimes tinged with purple. The fruit is a spindle-shaped achene with white pappus.—A. Diamond
