Prairie Indian Plantain is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family. It is native to the Black Belt region of central Alabama and to the Tennessee Valley region of north Alabama. Prairie Indian Plantain occurs in prairies, in pastures, in cedar glades, and on roadsides. It is a perennial with an enlarged tuberous taproot. Leaves are basal and cauline. The basal leaves are petiolate, elliptic in outline, with entire or wavy margins. The stem leaves are petiolate toward the base and sessile near the top, alternate, elliptic in outline, with entire or wavy margins. Flowers are in heads. The heads are in terminal corymbs. The midvein of the phyllaries is winged. Each head contains 5 disc flowers and no ray flowers. The disc flowers are greenish-white in color. The fruit is an achene. Prairie Indian Plantain is listed as a S1 species in Alabama (typically 5 or fewer occurrences, very few remaining individuals, acres, or miles of stream, or some factor of its biology making it especially vulnerable in the state), and globally as a G4G5 species (G4 - Imperiled globally because of rarity (6 - 20 occurrences, or few remaining acres, or miles of stream) or very vulnerable to extinction throughout its range because of other factors.
