Paraguayan Starbur is an introduced annual or weakly perennial herbaceous member of the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It can be found in the southern half of the state. Paraguayan Starbur grows on roadsides, in fields, in sandhills, in dry disturbed sandy woodlands, and in pastures. A native of South America, it is one of three species in the genus that can be found in Alabama. Paraguayan Starbur has prostrate stems that root at the nodes. The leaves are alternate, ovate to triangular in shape, and have irregular serrations along the margins. The leaves have glandular dots on both surfaces. The flowers are produced in heads. The seed are enclosed in an oblong bur that has hooked prickles.--A. Diamond
