Rue Anemone is a native herbaceous wildflower in the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It can be found throughout most of Alabama except for the southernmost counties. Rue Anemone occurs in hardwood forests, on slopes, and in ravines. It is a perennial from a tuberous rootstock. Leaves are basal, petiolate, ternately compound, and glabrous. The leaflets are ovate to obovate in outline and 3 lobed at the apex. Flowers are solitary or in 3-6 flowered umbels. The sepals number from 5-10 and are white to pink in color and longer than the stamens. In the center of the flower there is a dense cluster of small green pistils, and a ring of conspicuous stamens. The stamens have white filaments (stalks) and yellow anthers. The fruit is a fusiform achene. Rue Anemone is a common wildflower throughout much of Alabama. It thrives in a shady area with a rich, well-draining, loamy soil. Plants are available from some wildflower nurseries or can be grown from seed. The seed should be started in pots or flats and the plants transplanted into the garden after they have reached a size large enough to make them easy to handle. Because of its small size, umbelliform inflorescence, and tuberous roots, this species has been placed in the genus Anemonella.--A. Diamond
