Royal Snout Bean is a native perennial herbaceous member of the Bean family (Fabaceae). It is found in the southern tier of counties in Alabama. It can be found in sandhills, in xeric pine forests, on sandy roadsides, and in old fields. It is a perennial with a tap root. Stems are 2-3.5 feet in height, branched above the middle, and reddish-brown or green in color. The stems are glabrous to villous, and wand-like with arching branches. Leaves are alternate, petiolate, and trifoliate. The leaflets are ovate to elliptic in outline, entire, and pubescent on both surfaces. Flowers are 1-3 (usually solitary) in the leaf axils. The calyx has teeth equal to or shorter than the tube. The corolla is papilionaceous and yellow in color, sometimes with reddish-orange tints. The fruit is a 1-3 seeded pubescent legume. Royal Snout Bean is the largest of the five species of Rhynchosia native to Alabama.--A. Diamond
