According to various authors, typical Tilia americana [var. americana] is a more northern entity and does not occur in Alabama. The species is represented in Alabama by two different varieties, var. caroliniana and var. heterophylla. In many cases, collections of basswoods in Alabama can easily be assigned to either of those varieties, but in some cases, it is very difficult. To that end, we have created this page of "Tilia americana" for those specimens that have only been identified to the species level as Tilia americana. In the future as some of these become annotated to one variety or another, we will move them accordingly.
