This species was first collected in Alabama on Dauphin Island by Howard Horne in 2013. It is a native of the southern two thirds of peninsula Florida. Like several other exotics in subtropical Alabama this introduction may be accidental through the nursery trade and planting of other species where Vitis shuttlerworthii was inadvertently included in the planted material.
