This species was first collected in Alabama in 2010 by Wayne Barger in Jackson Co. and subsequently reported as Heteranthera multiflora (Barger et al 2019). When Horn described H. missouriensis (2020), he cited the Jackson County record as a paratype. This included H. missouriensis as part of the Alabama flora and as a consequence, excluded H. multiflora.
