Different populations of this species may produce flowers that open (chasmogamous) or flowers that never open (cleistogamous).
Based on the two types flowers mentioned above, this species is sometimes treated as two varieties. The typical variety, Corallorhiza odontorhiza var. odontorhiza was used to treat the cleistogamous forms while var. pringlei has been used to treat the open flowered form. For APA, we sink both under the species C. odontorhiza.
