Campernelle Jonquil is an introduced herbaceous perennial in the Amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). It is a naturally occurring hybrid of Jonquil (Narcissus jonquilla Linnaeus) and Common Daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus Linnaeus) first discovered in the eastern Mediterranean region. In Alabama it can be found statewide. Campernelle Jonquil is a "Southern heirloom" species that was once common in gardens throughout the South. It has persisted in old gardens, in pastures, on roadsides, and in cemeteries. It is a perennial from a bulb. The leaves are linear, thick, grooved, entire, and glabrous. The leaves usually exceed the inflorescence and are a dark green color. Flowers are produced in an umbel on a scape. The umbel is 1-4 flowered. The flowers are fragrant and uniformly bright yellow in color. The corona is ½ to ¾’s the length of the tepals. Campernelle Jonquil is sterile, but reproduces rapidly by forming new bulbs. It is commonly available from bulb companies and should be planted in the autumn. It prefers a well-draining soil in full sun.—A. Diamond
