A native to eastern Australia, southeastern Asia and throughout the islands of the western Pacific (Ward 2011-see citation below).
This species has long been recognized as Spirodela punctata (Meyer) Thompson or Spirodela oligorrhiza (Kurz) Hegelm. Les and Crawford (1999) demonstrated that it should be recognized in a new monotypic genus from Spirodela and created the combination Landoltia punctata (G. Mey.) Les & D.J. Crawford. Ward (2011) argued that the typification of Lemna punctata G. Mey (the basionym of S. punctata) was ambiguous and should be rejected along with the new genus Landoltia and combination L. punctata. Ward contended with the rejection of Lemna punctata, S. oligorrhiza was the correct name to be used. Thus far, most treatments have disagreed and have used Landoltia punctata.--B.R. Keener
