Hedgehog Wood Rush is a native herbaceous perennial in the Rush family (Juncaceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Hedgehog Wood Rush grows in hardwood forests, along streams, on bluffs, in ravines, and occasionally in lawns. It is a perennial from a short knotty rhizome. Leaves are primarily basal and form a small clump. The leaves sometimes have a swollen base. Leaves are linear and entire with long white hairs along the margins. The leaves lack a callus tip. Flowers are produced in glomerules. The central glomerule is sessile or nearly so and globose. Other glomerules are on long, straight peduncles that divergent by as much as 90 degrees. A single leaf-like bract subtends the inflorescence. It is shorter than the inflorescence. Individual flowers have 6 greenish or brown tepals with clear margins. The fruit is an obovoid dark brown capsule.—A. Diamond
