Vahl's Fimbry is a native herbaceous annual in the Sedge family (Cyperaceae). It is native primarily to southwest Alabama and central north Alabama. Vahl's Fimbry occurs on moist to wet recently exposed sands and gravel of rivers, ponds, and lakes with fluctuating water levels. It is a cespitose annual with fibrous roots. The leaves are linear-filiform, polystichous (arranged in a number of rows), spreading or recurved, and sparsely pubescent to glabrous. The blade is slightly involute and the leaf sheath is entire. Flowers are produced in terminal leafy-involucrate clusters of spikelets. The spikelets are cylindric and greenish in color. The involuvcral bracts are leafy and much longer than the spikelets. The fruit is an obovoid achene with horizontal rows of rectangular pits.—A. Diamond
