Yellow Pimpernel is a native herbaceous perennial in the Carrot family (Apiaceae). It is native to central and northern Alabama. Yellow Pimpernel occurs on basic soils of limestone outcrops, in prairies, and in rich deciduous forests. It is a perennial from a branched taproot. The stems are erect, 1-3 feet in height, and sparingly branched. The stems are round, glabrous, and slightly glaucous. Leaves are basal and cauline. The basal leaves are 2-3 times pinnately compound and stem leaves are smaller and 1-2 times pinnately compound. Leaflets are ovate to elliptic in outline, glabrous, with entire margins. The terminal leaflet is long stalked and the lower leaflets are sessile or nearly so. The foliage has a celery-like aroma when crushed. Flowers are produced in compound umbels of 12-15 umbellets. Each unblellet contains 10-15 stalked flowers. Individual flowers have 5 small, yellow petals. The fruit is a flattened, wingless, ribbed mericarp. Yellow Pimpernel is listed as an S1 species in Alabama (typically 5 or fewer occurrences, very few remaining individuals, or some factor of its biology making it especially vulnerable in the state) and globally as a G5 species (demonstrably secure globally, though it may be quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery). Yellow Pimpernel is a larval food plant for the Black Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio polyxenes).—A. Diamond
