Florida Hedge Hyssop is a native annual in the Plantain family (Plantaginaceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Florida Hedge Hyssop grows in wet ditches, swamps, seeps, and along spring runs. Stems are erect, branched above the middle, rooting at the lower nodes, and glabrate or finely glandular pubescent. The stems are round, slightly succulent, and bright green in color. Leaves are opposite, sessile, obovate to oval in outline, with entire or sparsely toothed margins. The flowers are produced singly from the leaf axis of the mid to upper leaves. The pedicels (flower stalks) are as long as or longer than the subtending leaves. Flowers are tubular with 5 expanded lobes. Flowers are pink to white in color with purple and yellow lines in the throat. The fruit is a capsule with many small seed.--A. Diamond
