Mullein Foxglove is a native herbaceous annual in the Broomrape family (Orobanchaceae). It is native to the Blackbelt region of central Alabama and the Tennessee Valley of north Alabama. Mullein Foxglove occurs in prairie woods, along forest margins, along streams, around cedar glades, and in other areas with soils derived from limestone. Mullein Foxglove is a hemiparasitic herb, parasitizing the roots of various species of Buckeyes (Aesculus). The root system is poorly formed with a stout taproot and few lateral roots. The stems are 3-6 feet in height, branched, green or reddish in color, and pubescent with retrorse hairs. The branches are stiff and rigidly upright. Leaves are opposite and petiolate (lower) or sessile (upper). The lower leaves are larger with longer petioles. They are ovate to elliptic in outline, pinnately dissected, with crenate margins. The upper leaves are short petiolate or sessile, lanceolate in outline, with entire or crenate margins. The leaves are glabrous or with a few short hairs. Flower are axillary and solitary on the upper third of the stems. Each flower has a pubescent 5-lobed calyx and a yellow 5-lobed corolla. The corolla is pubescent within. The fruit is a capsule. All parts of the plant turn black when damaged.--A. Diamond
