Tiarella austrina produces leafy stolons while the other Alabama Tiarella, T. wherryi, does not produce stolons.
Recent taxonomic research (Nesom 2021) has demonstrated that this taxon is limited to the northeastern counties. All of the Alabama material will have to be re-evaluated but most will be assigned to Tiarella wherryi.
