Bruce's Clubmoss is a natural F1 hybrid formed by the crossing of L. appressa (Chapman) Cranfill & L. prostrata (R.M. Harper) Cranfill, though some sources erroneously list the parent species as L. alopecuroides (L.) Cranfill & L. prostrata. The hybrid could potentially be found where both parental species co-occur. The epithet honors American Botanist James G. Bruce (1942- )
