Hairy Angelica is a native herbaceous perennial in the Carrot family (Apiaceae). It occurs in mesic or dry woodlands, on roadside banks, and in rocky woods. It is most common in well-draining acidic soils. Hairy Angelica can be found throughout Alabama. It is a perennial from a stout taproot. Leaves are basal and cauline. The basal leaves are large, pinnately or bipinnately compound, and thick and leathery in texture. The leaflets are elliptic in outline with serrate margins. The stem leaves are alternate, similar to the basal leaves but reduced in size. The petiole of the stems leaves is conspicuously expanded. Flowering stems are from 3-6 feet in height. The stems are hollow and glabrous below and pubescent towards the apex. The stems are sometimes glaucous. Flowers are produced in terminal or axillary compound umbels. Each compound umbel has 16-25 rays. The rays, pedicels, and ovaries are pubescent. Each flower has 5 white petals. The fruit is a schizocarp consisting of two one-seeded mericarps. The fruit is flattened, ribbed, winged, and pubescent. Hairy Angelica is available from some wildflower nurseries. It can also be grown from seed. Plants prefer well-draining acidic soil in full sun. Plants are drought and deer resistant. The white flowers of Hairy Angelica complement other summer blooming wildflowers. It is an excellent alternative to non-native Queen Anne’s Lace. The flowers of Hairy Angelica attract a wide variety of butterflies, bees, and other insects.--A. Diamond
