White Avens is a native herbaceous perennial in the Rose family (Rosaceae). It can be found throughout most of Alabama. White Avens grows along roadsides, in moist hardwood forests, on floodplains, and in low woods. It is a perennial from a rhizome or short up-right caudex. Leaves are basal and cauline. The leaves are petiolate (smaller stem leaves may be sessile), and simple, 3 to 5-foliolate or odd-pinnate with smaller leaflets below the larger ones. The leaf lobes are entire, toothed, or deeply parted. The leaves may be glabrous or pubescent. Flowers are produced in open, terminal 1-18 flowered cymes. Individual flowers have 5 green sepals, and 5 white petals. The fruit is an oval bristly aggregated of achenes. White Avens can be used in a woodland garden or as a groundcover in shady areas. The evergreen winter foliage makes an attractive garden accent during a time of the year when few plants are flowering.—A. Diamond.
