Tall Thimbleweed is a native herbaceous perennial in the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It is native to the northern 2/3’s of Alabama. Tall Thimbleweed grows in dry to mesic hardwood forests, around prairie margins, and on roadside banks. It is a perennial with a vertical caudex. Stems are 1-2 feet in height and sparingly branched. The stems are erect, green in color, and pubescent. Leaves are basal and cauline. The leaves are petiolate, ternately divided, and pubescent. The leaflets are oblanceolate to obovate in outline with serrate margins. Stem leaves are opposite or in whorls of 3. Flowers are in 3-9 flowered cymes. Each flower is on a long, pubescent peduncle. Each flower has 5 greenish-white to white sepals, no petals, 50-70 stamens, and numerous pistils. The fruit is an ovoid-cylindric head of achenes. Tall Thimbleweed is allelopathic, producing the compound protoanemonin which inhibits the growth or germination of other plants. Tall Thimbleweed is occasionally available from native plant nurseries. It prefers a site with partial shade to filtered sun and well-drained soil.--A. Diamond
