Shaggy Portulaca is a native herbaceous annual in the Purslane family (Portulacaceae). It is found in the southern half of Alabama. Shaggy Portulaca occurs as a lawn weed, in fields and gardens, in cracks of sidewalks and parking lots, on beaches, along paths, and on rock outcrops. It is an annual with a tap root. The stems are prostrate to erect, branched, glabrous, succulent, and often reddish in color. There are conspicuous white trichomes present at the nodes and in the inflorescence. Leaves are alternate or congested towards the tips of the stems, linear to oblong-lanceolate in outline, terete, succulent, and glabrous, with entire margins. Flowers are terminal or axillary. The flowers have 5-7 pink to purplish petals. The fruit is a capsule with many small shiny black seed. This is a highly variable species in terms of growth form and leaf shape. Temperature, moisture availability, habitat, and age all influence these traits.—A. Diamond.
