Hairy Phlox is a native herbaceous perennial in the Phlox family (Polemoniaceae). It can be found throughout most of Alabama, but appears to be absent from the Black Belt region and southeast Alabama. Hairy Phlox occurs in dry woodlands, in sandhills, in Long Leaf pine forests, and on roadside banks. It is a perennial with tough cord-like roots. Stems are multiple from a crown. Both fertile and sterile shoots are decumbent and erect at their tips. The plants are low growing and often partly concealed by grass or pine straw. The stems are pubescent. Leaves are opposite, elliptic to linear, pubescent, and ciliate along the margins. Flowers are produced in compact panicles or cymes. The sepals have stiff tips. Flowers are salverform with five lobes. The flowers are pink in color. Hairy Phlox is available from many nurseries selling native plants. It prefers a well-draining soil in full sun. Plants can be used as a low border, on banks, or in rock gardens.--A. Diamond
