Threadleaf Sundrops is a native annual in the Evening Primrose family (Onagraceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Threadleaf Sundrops occurs on limestone glades, in prairies, on sandstone or granite outcrops, in dry rocky woods, in sandy pine woods, in wet roadside ditches, on roadsides, and in cemeteries. It is an annual from a branched tap root. Stems are from a few inches to slightly over 1 foot in height. The stems are multiple from the base, branched near the top, or unbranched. Stems are pubescent near the base and glabrous near the apex. Leave are basal and cauline. Basal leaves are usually not present at flowering. Basal leaves are spathulate in outline, entire or serrate, glabrous, and form a rosette. Stem leaves are alternate, linear in outline, entire, and glabrous. Flowers are produced in a terminal raceme with the sessile flowers subtended by a single bract. Flowers have four yellow petals. Flowers open at night and usually have dropped the petals by mid-day. The fruit is a capsule. --A. Diamond
