Scutellaria incana and segregates have been a source of taxonomic confusion for some time. However, as indicted by Poindexter and Weakley (in Weakley et al 2018) this taxon "var. australis" is one of two varieties of S. incana that occurs in Alabama and is fairly common along the Eastern Gulf Coastal Plain of Alabama, Georgia, Florida (north) and Mississippi. Apparently, the typical variety, Scutellaria incana, var. incana is not currently known in the Alabama flora (Poindexter & Weakley in Weakley et al 2018). Specimens cited below from North Alabama should be reexamined to see if they are identifiable with the other variety that occurs in the state, S. incana var. punctata.
