The only naturally occuring vine of Hydrangea in Alabama.
This species has long been recognized as the only species of North America in the genus Decumaria. De Smet et al (2015) produced a molecular phylogeny demonstrating that Decumaria was nested within Hydrangrea necessitating the recognition of the species as a Hydrangea taxon.
