Dwarf Rhododendron is a native evergreen shrub in the Heath family (Ericaceae). It occurs at scattered locations across Alabama. Dwarf Rhododendron grows in rich hardwood forests, usually on rocky slopes or along streams. Dwarf Rhododendron grows from three to six feet in height. It is often colonial from rhizomes. The young twigs are covered in glandular-peltate scales. The leaves are alternate, entire, ovate in outline, and with scattered glandular-peltate scales. These scales are most noticeable along the midrib on the lower leaf surface. Large flora buds are produced at the apex of stems. Flowers open with the development of new shoots. Corollas are funnelform with five lobes. Flower color ranges from dark pink to white. The upper lobe of the corolla has a series of small green or orange spots. The fruit is a capsule. Dwarf Rhododendron is listed as an S2 species in Alabama (Typically 6 to 20 occurrences, few remaining individuals, acres, or miles of stream, or factors demonstrably making it very vulnerable in the state). Dwarf Rhododendron is readily available in the native plant trade. Plants can also be grown from seed, cuttings, or by layering. Plants should not be dug from the wild as they usually have a poorly developed and wide ranging root system and do not usually survive transplanting. Dwarf Rhododendron prefers a moist organic soil with a semi-shaded location. Mulch plants well to prevent water loss.--A. Diamond
