Hairy Clustervine is a native herbaceous vine in the Morning-Glory family (Convolvulaceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Hairy Clustervine grows on sand bars along rivers, in fields, on roadsides, and in disturbed urban habitats. It is an annual with a tap root. The vines are 3-15 feet in length and climb by twining. The stems are green or purplish in color and pubescent. Leaves are alternate, petiolate, ovate to elliptic in outline, with entire margins. Bother surfaces of the leaf have scattered hairs. Flowers are produced in dense capitate clusters from the axils of the leaves. The peduncles of the flower clusters are longer than the petiole of the subtending leaf. The flower clusters are subtended by foliaceous bracts and are pubescent with long hairs. Individual flowers have 5 lanceolate sepals that are densely hairy with long hairs. The corolla is funnelform, blue in color, with a white center. Like most Morning-Glories, the flowers of Hairy Clustervine open at night and close soon after sun rise. The fruit is a capsule. The seed are tan and warty. Hairy Clustervine is often abundant in disturbed habitats. It can be a pest in cultivated crops. Hairy Clustervine is resistant to a number of herbicides, making it hard to control.--A. Diamond
