Ivy Leaf Morning Glory is an introduced herbaceous trailing or twining annual vine in the Morning Glory family (Convolvulaceae). It is native to tropical America. Ivy Leaf Morning Glory occurs throughout Alabama. It occurs in fields, on roadsides, on river banks, and in disturbed woodlands. It is an annual with a tap root. The stems are up to 8 feet in length and climb by twining or trail over the ground. The stems are green or purple in color, and pubescent with long reflexed white hairs. The leaves are alternate, petiolate, cordate or 3-lobed in outline, and pubescent. The petiole is pubescent with long white hairs. Flowers are produced solitary or in 2-3 flowered cymes from the leaf axils. The peduncle is shorter than the petiole of the subtending leaf and is pubescent with reflexed hairs. The calyx has 5 linear-lanceolate lobes that are longer than the tube and curl outwards at their tips. The calyx tube is densely pubescent with long white hairs. The corolla is campanulate, sky blue in color with a white throat. The flowers open at night and close in the morning. The fruit is a capsule with 3-5 black, wedge shaped seed. Ivy Leaf Morning Glory is sometimes cultivated. It can be easily grown from seed. The plant is considered a pest in row crops, and is listed as an invasive species in Florida and Kentucky.--A.
