Trailing Pearlwort is a native herbaceous annual in the Pink family (Caryophyllaceae). It is native to all of Alabama. It is most common in areas with disturbed sandy soils. Trailing Pearlwort occurs in fallow fields, on roadsides, in ditches, in lawns, in cemeteries, and along trails. It is an annual with a tap root. The stems are erect, decumbent or ascending, glabrous, green in color, and often purple tinged towards the base. Leaves are opposite, connate (fused together) at the base, glabrous, linear, and entire. Flowers are solitary and terminal or axillary. The pedicel is filiform and glabrous or glandular pubescent. Individual flowers have 5 green sepals with whitish margins, and 5 white petals. Some flowers may lack petals (apetalous). The fruit is a capsule with many small tan seed.—A. Diamond
