The synonym below, L. alabamica var. brachystyla represented the eastern most populations of L. alabamica in Morgan County. Rollins (1963) named these populations primarily because they were found to be self-compatible, a condition opposite of the self-incompatible populations of the typical L. alabamica to the west in Franklin and other counties. He did acknowledge intermediate stages of the two extremes were observed.-B. Keener
